Title: Entertainment Apps (Music, Games, News)
Welcome back! So far in this module, you’ve learned how to download apps, use everyday tools like Maps and Calendar, and even connect with family on Facebook or explore the world with YouTube.
Today, we’re focusing on entertainment apps. These are apps designed to bring fun, joy, and relaxation into your life.
We’ll cover three of the most popular types for seniors:
- Music apps: To listen to your favorite songs.
- Game apps: To pass the time and keep your mind sharp.
- News apps: To stay informed about what’s happening in the world.
By the end of this lesson, you’ll feel confident using these apps for fun and enrichment.
Step 1: Music Apps
Music is one of the easiest ways to lift your mood, bring back memories, or simply relax.
Spotify
- Look for the Spotify app (green circle with three black lines).
- Open the app, and you’ll see a search bar at the top.
- Type in the name of your favorite artist, song, or album.
- Tap play, and enjoy!
Spotify also creates playlists — collections of songs — for moods like “Relaxing,” “Oldies,” or “Jazz.”
👉 Quick Tip: The free version works well, but you’ll hear ads between songs.
YouTube Music
If you already enjoy YouTube, you might like YouTube Music.
- The app looks like a red circle with a white play button.
- It works similarly to Spotify — type in what you want, and press play.
Step 2: Game Apps
Games aren’t just for kids — they’re a wonderful way to relax, keep your mind sharp, and even challenge yourself.
Popular Game Apps
- Solitaire: A classic card game.
- Sudoku: Great for logic and memory.
- Words With Friends: Like Scrabble, but you play with family or friends online.
- Candy Crush: A fun puzzle game with colorful candies.
How to Play
- Download a game from the Play Store.
- Tap the icon to open.
- Follow the instructions — most games explain themselves as you play.
👉 Quick Tip: Many games are free. Just be careful with “in-app purchases” — you don’t need to spend money to enjoy them.
Step 3: News Apps
If you like keeping up with the world, news apps make it easy to get information in one place.
Google News
- Look for the Google News app (blue, red, green, and yellow square with “G”).
- Open it to see headlines, stories, and categories like World, Health, Entertainment.
CNN, BBC, or Local News
- You can also download apps from your favorite news sources.
- Simply open the Play Store, type CNN or BBC, and install.
- Open the app to browse stories or watch video clips.
👉 Quick Tip: News apps often send notifications. If you find them distracting, you can turn them off in Settings.
Step 4: Practice Together
Here’s a fun practice routine:
- Open Spotify or YouTube Music and play one favorite song.
- Open a game app like Solitaire or Candy Crush and play for 5 minutes.
- Open Google News and read one headline.
You’ll see how quickly entertainment apps can brighten your day.
Real-Life Example
One of my students, Margaret, felt lonely in the evenings. When she discovered Spotify, she started listening to music from her teenage years. She told me, “It feels like I’m young again — I can close my eyes and be back in the 1960s.”
Another student, Paul, played Sudoku daily. He said it kept his mind sharp and gave him something enjoyable to do while waiting for appointments.
And George, a retired teacher, loved using Google News to follow education stories and stay engaged with the world.
Entertainment apps can do more than pass time — they bring joy, purpose, and stimulation.
Troubleshooting Tips
- Music stops playing when I close the app: That’s normal with free versions. If you want continuous play, consider paid upgrades.
- Game keeps asking me to pay money: Ignore the “buy” buttons — stick to the free levels.
- News notifications are annoying: Open Settings > Notifications > choose the news app > turn off notifications.
Step 5: Staying Balanced
It’s easy to get carried away with entertainment apps. A good rule of thumb:
- Use them for fun and relaxation.
- Take breaks so you don’t sit too long.
- Balance them with real-life activities like walking, reading, or talking with family.
👉 Quick Tip: Think of apps as spices — a little adds flavor, but too much can be overwhelming.
