Welcome to Module 3: Safety & Emergency Essentials.
Youโve already built digital confidence through health apps โ now itโs time to make sure that confidence extends to personal safety and peace of mind.
Today, weโll look at two incredibly helpful safety tools:
- Life360, an app that helps you share your location with trusted family members
- Kitestring, a simple tool that checks in with you and alerts others if you donโt respond
These apps arenโt about fear โ theyโre about freedom.
They let you go for walks, travel, or live independently with the quiet confidence of knowing someone always has your back.
By the end of this lesson, youโll know how to install, set up, and use both apps โ so you can stay safe anywhere, anytime.
[Section 1 โ Why Safety Apps Matter]
Letโs start with the โwhy.โ
Many adults over 50 live independently, travel alone, or spend time walking or driving by themselves.
Thatโs wonderful โ but it also means having a system in place for safety is just smart planning.
Think of these apps like digital seat belts โ you hope you never need them, but youโll be glad theyโre there.
They can:
- Help family know you arrived safely
- Automatically alert loved ones in an emergency
- Give you confidence to explore without worry
These tools add independence, not take it away.
[Section 2 โ App #1: Life360 (Location Sharing & Safety Circles)]
Letโs start with Life360, one of the most trusted safety apps worldwide.
What it does:
Life360 lets you create small private groups, called Circles, with your family or close friends.
You choose who to include and what to share โ like your location, driving details, or arrival notifications.
Hereโs how to set it up:
๐ฑ Step 1: Download Life360
- Go to your App Store or Google Play Store.
- Search for โLife360โ and tap Install.
- Open the app once itโs downloaded.
๐ค Step 2: Create an Account
- Use your email or Google login to sign up.
- When asked for permissions, choose Allow Location Access Always โ this ensures the app can track your movement even if itโs not open.
๐ช Step 3: Create Your Circle
- Tap โCreate a Circle.โ
- Name it something like โFamilyโ or โSafety Group.โ
- Invite loved ones by typing their phone numbers or sending an invite link via text or email.
Theyโll get a message inviting them to join your Circle.
๐บ๏ธ Step 4: Explore Your Dashboard
Once your Circle is set up, youโll see each memberโs location on a map.
You can:
- Tap a personโs name to see when they last checked in
- Set notifications like โAlert me when Mom gets homeโ
- Tap the SOS button in emergencies (this notifies everyone instantly)
๐ Quick Win Tip:
If youโre nervous about privacy, remember โ you control who sees your location and when.
You can pause location sharing anytime by tapping โTurn off locationโ in the app.
[Section 3 โ App #2: Kitestring (Check-In Safety Alerts)]
Now, letโs talk about Kitestring โ a simple yet brilliant safety tool, especially for people who go for walks, hikes, or errands alone.
Unlike Life360, Kitestring doesnโt track your location continuously.
Instead, it works by checking in with you โ like a digital friend who asks, โHey, are you okay?โ
Hereโs how it works:
๐ Step 1: Visit Kitestring Online
Kitestring isnโt in the app store โ itโs a text-based service.
Open your phoneโs web browser and go to: www.kitestring.io
Tap Get Started and follow the instructions.
๐ค Step 2: Create an Account
Enter your name, phone number, and the numbers of one or two trusted contacts.
โฐ Step 3: Set a Check-In Timer
Before heading out โ say, for a walk or drive โ send Kitestring a text like:
โCheck in 30 minutes.โ
Kitestring will text you at that time asking if youโre okay.
If you reply โOK,โ nothing happens.
If you donโt reply within a few minutes, it automatically sends a text to your emergency contact saying,
โKitestring hasnโt heard from [Your Name]. Please check on them.โ
Itโs simple, private, and doesnโt drain your phone battery.
[Section 4 โ Combining Life360 and Kitestring for Full Safety Coverage]
Now, letโs put these tools together.
- Life360 gives ongoing reassurance โ your family can see youโre safe and on the move.
- Kitestring gives independence โ it only checks in when you tell it to.
For example:
If youโre traveling alone, turn on Life360 to keep your family updated.
If youโre going for a walk or meeting someone new, use Kitestring as a one-time safety check.
Together, they create what I like to call your Digital Guardian System โ always there, never intrusive.
[Section 5 โ Safety, Privacy, and Boundaries]
A quick but important note about privacy.
Youโre always in control of what these apps can access:
- You can choose whoโs in your Circle on Life360.
- You can pause location sharing anytime.
- Kitestring only knows your phone number and contacts โ it doesnโt track your location at all.
The goal is balance: safety without surveillance.
These tools should help you feel protected, not watched.
If you ever feel unsure about settings, take a few minutes to explore them slowly.
And remember your โPause and Peekโ technique from earlier โ read every permission before accepting.
[Section 6 โ Real-Life Example: Freedom Through Technology]
Let me share a story that captures this beautifully.
Margaret, 72, loves to go on morning walks.
Her daughter, who lives in another city, used to worry when she didnโt answer her phone right away.
Now, Margaret uses Kitestring for every walk โ she texts, โCheck in 45 minutes.โ
If she forgets to reply, her daughter gets a gentle text.
For family trips, they use Life360, so everyone can see when she arrives safely.
Margaret told me, โThese apps gave me my independence back โ and gave my daughter peace of mind.โ
Thatโs the perfect example of technology working for you.
[Section 7 โ Quick Win Action for Today]
Hereโs your Quick Win Action for this lesson:
- Download Life360 and create a Circle with one trusted person.
- Visit www.kitestring.io and set up your account.
- Test both apps:
- In Life360, invite a family member and send them a location message.
- In Kitestring, set a 10-minute check-in timer to see how it works.
Once youโve tested them, check them off in your Confidence Tracker Worksheet.
Youโll instantly feel more confident knowing youโve added two powerful layers of safety to your daily life.
