Welcome back!
In this lesson, we’re going to prepare your phone for something most people don’t think about — emergencies.
It’s not a pleasant topic, but it’s one of the most empowering.
Because once you’ve done this setup, you’ll know that if anything unexpected ever happens — you, your loved ones, or first responders will have the critical information they need instantly.
Today, you’ll learn how to:
- Activate the Emergency SOS feature on your phone
- Set up or update your Medical ID information
- Add emergency contacts and enable key safety settings
These are the settings that could literally save a life — and the best part is, they take just a few minutes to set up.
[Section 1 – Why Emergency Readiness Matters]
Let’s start with a little perspective.
Most of us carry our phones everywhere — to the store, on walks, in the car. But if something happened and you couldn’t speak, would your phone be able to tell others who to contact, what medications you take, or if you have any medical conditions?
For many people, the answer is no.
Setting up your Emergency SOS and Medical ID ensures that vital information — like allergies, blood type, medications, and emergency contacts — is visible to first responders right from your lock screen.
Think of it like keeping an “In Case of Emergency” card, but digital and always up-to-date.
[Section 2 – The Emergency SOS Feature (Automatic Help)]
Let’s start with Emergency SOS, one of your phone’s most important built-in safety features.
This tool lets you quickly call emergency services and alert your chosen contacts — all with a simple button press.
Here’s how it works:
📱 On iPhone
- Open Settings → Emergency SOS.
- Turn ON both:
- Call with Hold and Release (press and hold the side button + volume button)
- Call with 5 Presses (press the side button five times quickly)
- Add Emergency Contacts by tapping Set Up Emergency Contacts in Health.
Once set up, pressing and holding the side button automatically dials 911 (or your local emergency number) and sends a message with your location to your listed emergency contacts.
🤖 On Android
- Open Settings → Safety & Emergency → Emergency SOS.
- Enable Quick Launch SOS.
(This is usually activated by pressing the power button five times quickly.) - Add Emergency Contacts.
- You can also enable Auto Call, which immediately calls your local emergency line.
👉 Quick Win Tip:
Try practicing the SOS sequence once, but cancel before the call goes through. This helps you feel confident using it without triggering an actual emergency.
[Section 3 – Setting Up or Updating Medical ID]
Next, let’s revisit your Medical ID, which you may have started in Module 2.
This feature lets first responders see key health information — even from your lock screen — without needing your passcode.
Here’s how to set it up or update it:
🩺 On iPhone
- Open the Health app.
- Tap your profile picture → Medical ID → Edit.
- Fill in:
- Medical conditions
- Allergies and medications
- Blood type
- Emergency contacts
- Turn ON “Show When Locked.”
Now, if you hold down your power button and tap Medical ID, that information will appear — even if your phone is locked.
📋 On Android
- Go to Settings → Safety & Emergency → Medical Information.
- Enter:
- Medical conditions
- Allergies and medications
- Blood type (if known)
- Emergency contact details
- Enable “Show on Lock Screen.”
You can test it by locking your phone and pressing Emergency on the screen — your Medical Info should appear.
👉 Safety Reminder:
Only include information you’re comfortable sharing publicly (since it’s visible from the lock screen). Avoid details like full addresses or sensitive notes.
[Section 4 – Adding Emergency Contacts]
Now let’s talk about emergency contacts — these are the people who will be automatically notified if you ever use SOS or if first responders check your phone.
You can add family members, neighbors, or trusted friends.
How to Add Them:
- On iPhone: Go to Health → Medical ID → Edit → Emergency Contacts → Add Contact.
- On Android: Go to Settings → Safety & Emergency → Emergency Contacts → Add Contact.
Once added, test it by viewing your Medical ID from the lock screen — you should see your contacts listed with their phone numbers.
👉 Quick Win Tip:
Choose at least two contacts if possible — one local and one family member or friend who’s always reachable.
[Section 5 – Key Safety Settings Worth Activating]
Now that your emergency setup is complete, let’s enable a few extra safety features that can make a big difference:
- Share My Location (iPhone)
- Go to Settings → Privacy → Location Services → Share My Location.
- Turn it ON so family members can find you through Find My if needed.
- Emergency Location Sharing (Android)
- Go to Settings → Location → Emergency Location Service.
- Turn ON “Send Emergency Location.”
- Flashlight Shortcut:
- On most phones, swipe down from the top of your screen and tap the flashlight icon — practice turning it on quickly for night safety.
- Battery Saver Mode:
- Always keep your phone above 20% when leaving the house.
- Turn on “Battery Saver” in emergencies to extend power if you need help.
These small details can make a big difference in a real-world situation.
[Section 6 – Real-Life Example: How Preparation Saves Lives]
Let me share a true story that shows how powerful this setup can be.
A student of mine, Carol, 66, fainted unexpectedly at a park.
A passerby picked up her phone, saw “Medical ID” on the lock screen, and was able to see her medical condition and call her daughter immediately — all within seconds.
When she recovered, Carol said, “I had no idea that one setting could make such a difference.”
That’s what we’re doing here — small preparation, big peace of mind.
[Section 7 – Quick Win Action for Today]
Your Quick Win for today is simple but powerful:
- Turn on Emergency SOS on your phone.
- Update your Medical ID or Emergency Information.
- Add at least two emergency contacts.
- Test the lock screen view to make sure everything is visible.
Once you’ve done that, record it in your Confidence Tracker Worksheet.
You’ve now made your phone a silent guardian that’s ready to protect you — even when you can’t.
[Section 8 – What’s Next]
Incredible work — you’ve completed one of the most important lessons in this entire course.
Your phone is now ready to help you in an emergency — giving both you and your loved ones peace of mind.
In our next lesson, Lesson 3: Protecting Privacy — Passwords, Scams, and Safe Browsing 101,
we’ll focus on staying safe online — how to spot scams, protect your accounts, and browse the internet confidently without fear of fraud or mistakes.
You’re not just tech-capable anymore — you’re becoming digitally secure.
I’ll see you in the next lesson, where we’ll finish this safety module strong.
