IPhones for Seniors

Welcome to Module 4! Up until now, youโ€™ve learned how to connect with people through calls, texts, FaceTime, photos, and even messaging apps. Now weโ€™re going to shift into something different โ€” using your iPhone as a tool for everyday life.

One of the most powerful tools on your iPhone is the Maps app. It doesnโ€™t just help you get from point A to point B. It helps you feel confident going anywhere, whether thatโ€™s visiting a friend, finding a new restaurant, or even locating the nearest pharmacy.

By the end of this lesson, youโ€™ll know how to:

  • Search for places and addresses.
  • Get step-by-step directions for driving, walking, or public transit.
  • Use Maps safely, so you never feel rushed or confused.

Letโ€™s start with the basics: opening Maps.

Find the Maps app on your iPhone โ€” it looks like a little road with a colorful path. Tap it, and youโ€™ll see a map of your current location. The blue dot on the map shows where you are right now.

At the bottom, youโ€™ll see a search bar that says โ€œSearch for a place or address.โ€ Tap it and type in where you want to go. For example, type โ€œWalmart,โ€ or type in an exact address like โ€œ123 Main Street.โ€ As you type, suggestions will appear. Tap the one you want.

Once youโ€™ve chosen your location, a small window will pop up with the placeโ€™s name and address. Tap โ€œDirections,โ€ and Maps will calculate the best route.

Now, youโ€™ll see options for how to travel:

  • A car icon for driving directions.
  • A walking person for walking routes.
  • A bus or train for public transit, if itโ€™s available in your area.

Most people start with driving directions, so letโ€™s try that. Tap the car icon, then tap โ€œGo.โ€ Your iPhone will begin giving you turn-by-turn directions. Youโ€™ll hear a voice saying things like, โ€œIn 500 feet, turn left onto Main Street.โ€ The screen will also update with arrows and street names.

If you make a wrong turn โ€” donโ€™t panic! Maps will automatically adjust and find a new route for you. Thatโ€™s one of the best features: you canโ€™t โ€œmess it up.โ€

Now, letโ€™s talk about walking directions. If you choose the walking icon instead, Maps will guide you step by step on foot. This is perfect if youโ€™re exploring a new town, or if you just want to find the closest coffee shop.

If you live in an area with buses or trains, the public transit option is fantastic. Maps will show you which bus to take, where the stops are, and what time they arrive.

Hereโ€™s a pro tip: if youโ€™re planning a trip but not leaving right away, you can tap โ€œLeave Nowโ€ at the top and change it to โ€œLeave Atโ€ or โ€œArrive By.โ€ This way, Maps will plan your trip based on the time you need.

Now, letโ€™s practice using Maps safely.

If youโ€™re driving, itโ€™s important not to stare at your phone while on the road. Instead, place your iPhone in a holder on your dashboard, or simply listen to the voice directions. If you have Bluetooth in your car, the directions will even play through your speakers.

For walking or public transit, itโ€™s a little easier โ€” you can glance at your phone when needed. But remember, you can always tap the screen to repeat the last instruction if you missed it.

Letโ€™s practice together:

  1. Open the Maps app.
  2. Type in the name of a nearby place, like a grocery store.
  3. Tap โ€œDirections,โ€ then choose driving, walking, or transit.
  4. Press โ€œGoโ€ and listen to the first step.
  5. When youโ€™re ready, tap โ€œEndโ€ to stop navigation.

Now, letโ€™s answer a few common questions:

  • Does using Maps cost money? No โ€” the app itself is free. The only thing it uses is data if youโ€™re not on Wi-Fi, but most phone plans cover this easily.
  • What if I canโ€™t hear the directions? Make sure your volume is turned up. You can also adjust the voice volume in Settings under โ€œMaps โ†’ Navigation Voice Volume.โ€
  • Can I preview the route before I go? Yes! After you type in the address but before you press โ€œGo,โ€ scroll through the steps. Youโ€™ll see the entire route written out.

Hereโ€™s your quick win action step:
Today, practice searching for one address in your Maps app. Get directions, listen to the first step, then end the trip. If you feel ready, try using Maps on your next outing โ€” even if itโ€™s just to the grocery store. Youโ€™ll see how freeing it feels to know youโ€™ll never get lost again.

Your iPhone is more than just a phone โ€” itโ€™s a guide. And once you trust Maps, youโ€™ll feel comfortable going anywhere with confidence.

In our next lesson, weโ€™ll explore another everyday tool โ€” your calendar and reminders. These features help you keep track of appointments, birthdays, and daily tasks, so nothing slips through the cracks.

Youโ€™re doing wonderfully โ€” keep going, and Iโ€™ll see you in the next lesson!
