Title: Streaming TV and Movies with Netflix/Hulu

Welcome to Module 10! In the last module, you learned how to use telehealth apps to see doctors without leaving home. That was a huge step for health convenience.

Now, letโ€™s shift gears and focus on entertainment apps. These apps let you watch movies and TV shows whenever you want โ€” no cable or DVDs needed. Today, weโ€™ll look at Netflix and Hulu, two of the most popular streaming services.

By the end of this lesson, youโ€™ll know how to:

  • Download and set up Netflix or Hulu
  • Browse and search for shows and movies
  • Play, pause, and adjust video settings
  • Save favorites to watch later

Step 1: What Are Streaming Apps?

Streaming apps let you watch TV shows and movies instantly over the internet. Instead of waiting for a show to air or renting DVDs, you just open the app and pick what you want to watch.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Quick Tip: Think of them as giant libraries of entertainment right on your phone.

Step 2: Downloading and Setting Up

  1. Open the Google Play Store.
  2. Search for Netflix or Hulu.
  3. Tap Install.
  4. Open the app.
  5. Sign in with an existing account, or tap Sign Up to create one.
    • Youโ€™ll need an email address and a payment method.
    • Netflix and Hulu both offer monthly subscriptions.

Now youโ€™re ready to start watching!

Step 3: Browsing Content

When you open the app, youโ€™ll see:

  • Categories like โ€œTrending Now,โ€ โ€œComedy,โ€ โ€œDrama,โ€ โ€œDocumentariesโ€
  • Recommendations based on what youโ€™ve watched
  • Search bar to find specific shows or movies

๐Ÿ‘‰ Example: On Netflix, you can search for โ€œThe Crownโ€ or โ€œOur Planet.โ€ On Hulu, you might look for โ€œThe Golden Girls.โ€

Step 4: Playing a Show or Movie

  1. Tap the title you want to watch.
  2. Tap the Play button.
  3. Your video starts immediately.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Controls:

  • Pause/Play: Tap the screen to pause or play.
  • Volume: Use the phoneโ€™s side buttons.
  • Full Screen: Tap the square icon to make the video bigger.

Step 5: Adding to Your Watchlist

Both Netflix and Hulu let you save shows to watch later.

  • On Netflix: Tap + My List.
  • On Hulu: Tap + Add to My Stuff.

๐Ÿ‘‰ This keeps your favorites in one place so you donโ€™t have to search again.

Step 6: Adjusting Video Quality

If your internet is slow, videos may buffer (pause to load). You can:

  • Move closer to Wi-Fi
  • Pause other devices using the internet
  • In settings, choose a lower video quality to reduce buffering

Step 7: Practice Together

Letโ€™s practice:

  1. Open Netflix or Hulu.
  2. Browse for a show you recognize.
  3. Tap it, then press Play.
  4. Pause the video, then resume.
  5. Add it to your watchlist.

Thatโ€™s all it takes to start enjoying streaming!

Real-Life Example

One of my students, Helen, missed her favorite old TV shows. After learning Hulu, she found and watched The Golden Girls again. She said, โ€œIt felt like visiting old friends.โ€

Another student, Mark, uses Netflix to watch documentaries with his grandchildren. He said, โ€œItโ€™s fun to learn together and talk about what we just saw.โ€

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Forgot password: Tap โ€œForgot Passwordโ€ on the sign-in screen.
  • App not working: Close and reopen, or reinstall from the Play Store.
  • Video keeps pausing: Check Wi-Fi signal or restart your router.
  • Too expensive: You can cancel anytime and restart later.

Step 8: Extra Features

Once youโ€™re comfortable, try:

  • Subtitles/Closed Captions: Great for clearer listening.
  • Profiles: Create different profiles for family members.
  • Downloads: Save shows to watch offline (great for travel).

Wrap-Up & Next Steps

Letโ€™s review:

  • Netflix and Hulu are streaming apps with huge libraries of shows and movies.
  • You can search, play, pause, and save favorites easily.
  • Adjust settings to improve video quality if needed.

Your take-action tool for today:

  • Download Netflix or Hulu.
  • Browse categories and play one show.
  • Add something to your Watchlist/My Stuff.

In the next lesson, weโ€™ll continue with entertainment apps by exploring music streaming apps like Spotify and Pandora โ€” bringing music and radio to your phone anytime.

Youโ€™re doing fantastic โ€” Iโ€™ll see you in Module 10, Lesson 2: Listening to Music with Spotify and Pandora.
